Hospice Experiences

Carolyn Cassin

Jewish Hospice Chaplaincy Network began with the vision that every Jewish person in southeast Michigan deserved the highest quality experience at the end of their life. As CEO of the Hospice of Michigan, and later as CEO of the National Hospice Work Group, I had the privilege of being a small part of the creation of this unique and remarkable community service. Rabbi Bunny Freedman taught all of us that caring for the dying is more than a medical or nursing experience. In his role as Rabbi and former Director of Jewish Services at Hospice of Michigan I witnessed as he helped countless families — and those caring for them — learn that dying is a profoundly cultural, spiritual and family experience. I watched as he changed lives by surrounding patients with those who compassionately minister by understanding the heritage and culture of a patient. Rabbi Bunny, through his work, transformed the end of life experience into a peaceful and uplifting one. His determination to ensure that every Jewish family has access to this enhanced level of care drove the creation of The Caring Coalition between all hospices in our community. This program is a precious and important community resource and one that I am extremely proud of. It is up to each of us to make sure this service continues and expands so that we can make good on this promise to our community: No Jew dies alone.

Thank you to the Jewish Hospice Chaplaincy Network for the immense difference you make in the lives of every Jewish person in our community. When you donate to Jewish Hospice, you make every hospice caregiver a better professional, which enriches all our lives.

I care about Jewish patients and their families.
