Rose Kaufman lived comfortably but feared she would outlive her resources and become a burden to her family. As she approached her 90th birthday and it became obvious that would not happen, her focus changed to leaving a gift that would be impactful. She turned to Herb Kaufman, her stepson, for advice. From that conversation was born a legacy that will live for generations to come.
Forty five years prior to Rose's death, she sat at the bedside of her only child, her 19-year-old daughter Lois Rogvoy. Rose watched in horror as Lois bravely fought both the leukemia and the radiation treatments. Rose described the radiation treatments as burning Lois' body in hopes of ridding her of this disease. Lois lost her battle, and the agony of watching her daughter suffer never went away for Rose.
Herb suggested to Rose that she use her compassion to help others suffering similar anguish by establishing a gift to the newly formed Jewish Hospice and Chaplaincy Network. Herb believed the Jewish Community needed the services offered by JHCN and Rose's gift would be a springboard for an infant organization bound for success. Rose was proud of the immediate impact her generosity had; in a very short period, she realized the importance of her decision as Jewish Hospice and Chaplaincy Network took charge of her end-of-life care.
Rose's gift has become part of the permanent endowment to support the Jewish Hospice & Chaplaincy Network. Today, JHCN treats more than 500 patients and thousands of their family members every year. As we pay tribute to Rose Kaufman for her vision and generosity, we can only imagine the pride Lois would have felt knowing that her mother has had such an impact on those in need of the end-of-life care not available to her in 1956.
We care about Jewish patients and their families.
