Compassion, support, dignity, caring and spiritual guidance; words and, more importantly, deeds that I use to describe the Jewish Hospice and Chaplaincy Network. I was always aware of JHCN, but I never recognized the importance of their responsibilities, purpose and function until my family was confronted with an impossible dilemma. My sister and I were conflicted as to what was best for our father at the age of 89. Certain life threatening surgery and, if successful, a very long and difficult rehabilitation process, or… .
There was no doubt in our minds that Dad was tired and resigned to his fate, but nevertheless we did not want to give up (if that was a viable option). Enter Rabbis Freedman and Kaluzny. Helping us understand the options available to us, spiritually and medically, was of great comfort. Allowing us to abide by the wishes of our father, as difficult as it was, with compassion and understanding helped us through a very emotional process. But, more importantly, knowing that Dad's end of life care was in trusted hands; that he was never alone; that his pain management was under expert control and that he was receiving spiritual care, we believe, made our father's journey easier and our decision acceptable and appropriate under very difficult circumstances. When we cooperate, everyone's quality of life improves. Donate today so Jewish Hospice may continue its mission.
